Deron Rust Memorial Next At Georgetown; Honoring True Supporter Of Delaware Dirt Racing

Story By: BRETT DEYO / GEORGETOWN SPEEDWAY – GEORGETOWN, DE – A man with true passion for Delaware auto racing and particularly Georgetown Speedway will be honored on Friday, May 4.

Deron Rust, standout First State driver who later took over the promotional reigns at Georgetown, will be remembered with the annual running of the Deron Rust Memorial at the Sussex County track.

Sunoco big-block/small-block Modifieds headline the card with qualifying and a 33-lap main event offering $3,396 to the winner and $300 to take the green flag. The ‘396’ number was Rust’s trademark number during his Modified racing days.

Lap money will further sweeten the pot for drivers taking part in this event.

The Deron Rust Memorial event takes place on the Friday night of NASCAR festivities at nearby Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del. As a result, a later starting time will be in effect for this event.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. Grandstand gates will be unlocked at 5 p.m. Hot laps will hit the track at 7 p.m., with racing at 7:45 p.m. This adjusted schedule will allow fans to make the trip south once Dover festivities are completed for the day.

RUSH Late Models and L&J Sheet Metal Crate 602 Sportsman will each race in 20-lap main events offering $1,000 to the winner.

Filling out the program will be the Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars, Delmarva Chargers and Delaware Super Trucks.

Friesen, of Sprakers, N.Y., is a two-time and defending winner of the Deron Rust Memorial, having won in both 2016 and 2017.
