Dominic Scelzi Starts Strong During World Of Outlaws Show At Bakersfield
Story By: SHAWN MILLER GARY SCELZI MOTORSPORTS – BAKERSFIELD, CA – Dominic Scelzi put together one of the strongest starts to a night last Saturday at Bakersfield Speedway.
Scelzi qualified fourth quickest out of 37 drivers before he won a heat race – his second in the last three races – from the pole position to lock his family owned, Roth Motorsports backed team into the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series dash.
“We had a brand new Speedway engine in and it ran phenomenal all night,” he said. “I feel like we were one of the fastest cars throughout the night.”
Scelzi advanced from fourth to third place in the dash to line up on the inside of the second row in the A Main.
“We went into the first corner and I hit a hole, biked up and lost a few spots,” he said. “I think we fell to about 10th on the start and then dropped back a few more spots before I maneuvered back into the top 10. Then on a restart a couple of guys got together. I had nowhere to go and spun to avoid crashing.”
Scelzi restarted at the back of the pack following the mid-race incident and he pulled into the pits soon after. He was credited with a 21st-place finish.
“It was probably one of the raciest tracks I’ve been on,” he said. “It was great. I hope we get to race there more often in the future. Our result wasn’t what we hoped for, but it was a great track.”
Last Friday’s event at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., rained out.
Scelzi will be off this weekend before he returns to competition on April 7 at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.
