Daugherty/Gleason Win Woodhull’s Pit Stop Challenge At Arnot Mall Show This Weekend

Story By: STEVEN OVENS / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – A record Saturday crowd filed through the Arnot Mall for day one of the Swarthout Recycling Car Show. Adults and youth alike gathered to take in the sights of high-powered racecars for the first time in preparation for Woodhull’s 54th consecutive season of racing scheduled to kick off April 14.

A popular event on the car show itinerary every year is the Saturday night Pit Stop Challenge that takes place in Center Court. This weekend, Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill jumped onboard to sponsor the contest that sees teams of three go head-to-head in changing a right rear tire the fastest.

Nine teams tried their hand at making a fast pit stop on Billy Van Pelt’s No. 2 Modified. All nine teams had one shot to make a quick stop, with the top three teams advancing to the championship round to decide the overall champion.

Fans lined all around the second floor of the mall all through the food court and over into the entrance of the movie theatre, trying to get the best view of the competition. Meanwhile, Team Daugherty/Gleason, “The Misfits” and Peoples Motorsports all advanced their way into the championship round of the tire competition.

In the championship round Peoples Motorsports had a good pit stop going, only to leave four lug nuts loose and incurring a 12-second penalty. The Misfits logged a solid stop at 30.05 seconds, putting the pressure on the Daugherty/Gleason team who drew last for the championship round.

Chris Daugherty, Shawn Gleason and Dylon Gleason had a near 24-second stop in the works, but a lug nut got away and Daugherty had to regroup and get it in place before running back to the starting line. When the clock stopped, the championship was won with a time of 28.30 even after the miscue.

Each team will receive gift certificates to Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill, passes to Woodhull Raceway and personalized plaques for the top three finishing teams.

Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill is the popular Arnot Mall restaurant that opened their newest location in 2017 and has been a major hit to the local community. Known for their homemade mac and cheese, Mooney’s has found success with their creative menu and generous portions. Woodhull Raceway and the racing community wishes to thank Mooney’s for their support of local short track race teams.
