“Great Crate Race” $3,000-To-Win At Five Mile Point This Saturday
Story By: ANDREW HARPELL / FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY – KIRKWOOD, NY – Five Mile Point Speedway has been the home to some fantastic Crate Sportsman racing in 2017 and has hosted the highest paying events in the northeast.
This Saturday the 67th consecutive year of racing will culminate with the running of the “Great Crate Race” for Crate Sportsman. The 67 lap event will pay $3,000 to win. Racing begins at 4 p.m.
The 2017 racing season at Five Mile Point Speedway has seen impressive car counts throughout. Over 100 different Crate Sportsman drivers have converged on the quarter mile oval during the course of the season. The speedway has hosted four $1,000 to win specials, one $2,000 to win special and this Saturday will see the winner earning a cool $3,000.
Kyle Rohner has been the guy to beat at Five Mile Point Speedway the past two seasons. Rohner picked up the 2016 and 2017 Crate Sportsman Track Championships. Last year he was the winner of the “Great Crate Race” over Dave Marcucelli, Stacy Jackson, Ken Titus and Rocky Warner. Last year the race was 66 laps to commemorate the 66 consecutive years of racing. The final 31 laps of the race went caution free in an event that saw a total of only 4 cautions throughout. Rohner struggled a bit this season during a stretch but rebounded strong as the season wound down. He most recently collected $2,000 for his victory during the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend back in early October.
The Street Stocks will add to the exciting racing card this Saturday. They will do battle in a 25 lap feature event paying an impressive $1,000 to win. The event will run off of the All-Star Fight Night Series rules.
The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder drivers have their richest pay day of the season this Saturday and teams are expected from as far as five hours away for this season ending event. The 40 lap special feature will pay $1,000 to the winner. Last year Dennis Kessler pulled off the upset victory in a race slowed by only three yellows. This year’s event will also culminate the five race “Fantastic Five for Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders” program. A champion will be crowned as well on Saturday.
The Factory Stocks will round out the racing card on Saturday with at 20 lap main event paying $400 to win.
Kids 12 years old and younger will be admitted in to the grandstand free of charge on Saturday. There will be “trick or treating” with the drivers, a pumpkin contest and best costume award for youngsters in attendance.
Pit gates open at 1 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Practice begins at 3 p.m. with racing set for 4 p.m. There is also an open practice on Friday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.
