Fabulous FWD / Hornets Duke It Out At World Short Track Championship
Story By: COLBY GORNIEWICZ / DIRTCAR – CONCORD, NC – After running two features on Friday, night two of the OneDirt World Short Track Championship, the QuarterMaster Hornets took to The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Saturday for another qualifying session. The times set would determine the line-ups for the two QuarterMaster Hornet 15-lap Championship Features Saturday evening.
Looking for his second Feature win in two days, Eric Boozel in the No. 151 started from the Pole in the first QuarterMaster Hornet Feature. Showing the way for the first 12 laps, Boozel was challenged by Andrew Smith for the lead with under three laps to go. Diving down into Turn 3, Smith made a slide job stick and got by Boozel for the lead. As the field was coming to the white flag, the fourth place running car of Jacob Bright blew up a motor, causing a smoke screen for the 24-car field.
That didn’t slow down Smith as he coached his No. 62 QuarterMaster Hornet around the 4/10th-mile oval en route to picking up the OneDirt World Short Track Championship victory.
“Man, what a weekend,” said Andrew Smith. “This has been a hard battle for us, and no better way to do it then to race with my buddy Eric [Boozel]. Man, I’m worn out; I’m still shaking. I got to thank World Racing Group and OneDirt for putting this event on. It’s an awesome event to come to.”
In the second QuarterMaster Hornets Feature, late-arrival Eddie McGrew was a force to be reckoned with, but Jay Johnson — who won the Sportsman of the Year Award in his division earlier in the day — was giving him all he could handle as the two battled side-by-side during much of the Feature event. The field was slowed with two laps remaining for a slow car rolling through Turns 3 and 4. Under yellow flag conditions Johnson spun in Turn 1 and pointed his Hornet to the infield, exiting his vehicle with a mechanical failure.
On the ensuing restart McGrew had two more circuits left around The Dirt Track at Charlotte to pick up the victory, but Donavan Beachum had other plans. Beachum and McGrew got tangled exiting Turn 2 as the two battled for the lead. And Adam Reseigh was in the right place at the right time.
“This is a great way to end the weekend. I just can’t believe it – right place at the right time,” said Reseigh. I was here last year and didn’t get a win last year and finally got me one this year. I’m just in awe right now. I pretty much do everything on my own, including building my own car and motors.”
Marc White and Daniel Wright picked up the $50 Summit Racing gift card as the hard chargers in the QuarterMaster Hornets Features.
