It Was An Amazing Night At Thunder Mountain For Colton Wilson
Column By: DYLAN FRIEBEL / RPW – LISLE, NY – When Colton Wilson rolled into Thunder Mountain on Saturday night, he was winless. When he left, he had won his first Modified feature ever.
The former Sportsman driver & 600cc Sprint Track Champion picked up a well deserved feature win. Nipping at his heels was the champ Danny Creeden with Nick Nye, Cory Costa, and Brent Wilcox rounded out the top 5.
While Colton does his homework week in and week out, so does everyone else.
“The hardest part is everyone just get faster as the year goes on, we always try to get one step ahead but it seems like everyone gets two steps.” He told me. “This is one of our more consistent years in a modified. We’ve been at this 3 years and we seem to get better every year.”
“We did well in our heat tonight,” Wilson said. “It helped us a lot since we started 4th. We’ve been trying to be ahead of everyone and it seems that when we try to get one step ahead, lady luck just doesn’t have it in the cards for us. We’ve been good this year, but just not all the time. Boy, tonight feels good, though.”
Wilson know just how big his win was.
“When you beat (Danny) Creeden here you’ve done a good job,” he said. “I could hear him coming behind me, and i knew he was gonna be right there.” Danny’s really fast. He’s won a lot here and you just knew he was gonna be there at the end.
With the champ coming, Wilson just wanted the race to be over. However, it wasn’t the case.
“Yellows are never your friend when you are in the lead,” he said. “I just tried to hit my marks. We’ve won a few Sportsman races here in the past but never a Modified feature. We’ve been close but just haven’t been able to pull it off yet.
Saturday night was a big relief for him.
“It’s pretty cool to get the first one finally out of the way,” he said. “This adds a lot to our second half of the season. We’ve been a pretty confident bunch the last eight weeks. We’ve just been getting tough little breaks. However, our confidence was pretty high tonight and it can only get better from here.”
Wilson was quick to acknowledge those who helped him get his first career Modified win. He knows its a total team effort.
“I can’t thank everyone enough,” he said. From our owners, Pat and Marty, to all the sponsors on the car and Enders Racing Engines. They built us a good piece here. She seems like to Thunder Mountain a lot more than even Outlaw (Speedway) or Afton (Motorsports Park).”
Other winners on the night were Aaron Bowes in the 600 Xcel Modifieds, Landon Spoonhower in Rookie Sportsman, Justin LaDue in 4-Cylinder, Mike Nagel Jr. in Crate Sportsman, Brain White in Open Sportsman, Keith Lamphere in IMCA Modifieds and Butch Greene in Street Stocks.
