Williams Grove’s Morgan Cup Weekend To Host World Of Outlaws
Story By: SHAWN BROUSE / WILLIAMS GROVE SPEEDWAY – MECHANICSBURG, PA – Williams Grove Speedway will present the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series this Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20 with time trials getting underway both nights at 7:30 pm.
Gates for each day of the affair will open at 5 pm with fireworks included in both programs.
Adult general admission tickets are $30 each night with youth ages 13 – 20 admitted for $15 and ages 12 and under admitted to the shows for free.
The Williams Grove campground will open at noon on Wednesday for those wishing to stay the weekend at the historic oval with spots priced at just $30.
The Williams Grove Speedway portion of the 50/50 during both weekend shows will be given to a collection of charities including: Kickin For Kids, Kids Camp Cadet, Kiwanis and the Bethesda Project.
The May 19 and 20 outlaws stand at Williams Grove will be the first match up of the season by the circuit against the Pennsylvania Posse sprint car stars as both groups meet to compete in The Morgan Cup weekend presented by NAPA/NGK Spark Plugs.
Friday’s show will feature a showdown going 25 laps in distance, paying $8,000 to the winner.
Saturday’s feature will be 30 laps with $12,000 posted as the regular winner’s share plus another $5,000 to win the Morgan Cup presented by NAPA/NGK Spark Plugs, making the Saturday grand total $17,000 for the checkered flag.
The Saturday 2017 Morgan Cup event honors late Williams Grove owner Morgan Hughes with not only cash but bragging rights also up for grabs.
The Morgan Cup trophy itself will go home for another season to the circuit headquarters of whoever wins the race, either to the home of the PA Posse at the offices of Williams Grove Speedway or to the corporate home of the World of Outlaws in North Carolina.
Already a winner at the track this season as well as elsewhere in the region, Lance Dewease of Fayetteville won the only May outlaws program completed at Williams Grove last season with the other falling victim to rain.
Still early in the 2017 season, Freddie Rahmer of Salfordville has established himself atop the Lawrence Chevrolet
Williams Grove Speedway point standings and he could very easily be a contender for a win during the upcoming outlaws two-day stand along with Dewease.
Perennial World of Outlaws point champion Donny Schatz of North Dakota and Connecticut’s David Gravel currently sit atop the outlaws point standings with Schatz having established himself as the leading circuit winner to date while actually holding the point lead.
