Solid Weekend For HBR: Two Top 5’s At Fulton
Story BY: MANDEE PAUCH / HBR – WEEDSPORT, NY – The HBR team produced two solid top-five finishes Saturday night at the high-banked Fulton Speedway.
The team was set to kickoff their weekend Friday night at Brewerton Speedway but the race was canceled due to rain.
Jimmy Phelps opened up the night with a fifth place finish from his sixth place starting spot.
Phelps fifth place finish in the heat race locked him into the 14th starting position for the main event.
Phelps maneuvered his way through the field and was able to claim the second spot with five laps remaining. “We had a final restart with two laps to go,” Phelps noted. “I think we were good enough to win, we just needed some more laps to get going. I thought we had a really good car.”
For the second week in a row, Phelps capped off his Saturday night in the runner up spot at Fulton.
“It’ll come,” he said. “We just have to break that barrier.”
Teammate Max McLaughlin had a strong heat race. McLaughlin started third and ran off with the heat race victory.
McLaughlin started on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“I dialed the front brake in when I was running the bottom,” McLaughlin said. “When I moved to the top it was too much and my brakes locked up and I jumped the cushion.”
Despite losing a few spots, McLaughlin toughed it out and drove back through to finish in fourth.
Next on tap for the HBR team will be at Brewerton Speedway this Friday night, June 2, Fulton Speedway on Saturday, June 3 and a special show on Sunday, June 4 at Weedsport Speedway for the Big Block vs. Small Block Challenge.
