Perrego Becomes Fifth Different Winner At Five Mile Point

Story By: ANDREW HARPELL / FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY – KIRKWOOD, NY – Anthony Perrego made his second start of the 2017 season at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday and it paid off. With the Modified victory Perrego became the fifth different feature winner in as many weeks in the division. New Jersey’s Brad Cicio was the Crate Sportsman winner with Shane Wolf, Jr. becoming the first repeat winner in the Street Stock division. Other winners were: Buck Mills, Jr. (Factory Stock), Nick Kennedy (Lightning Cat Expert), Randy Lane (Lightning Cat Novice) and Dalton Maynard (Slingshots).

Jesse Kline and P.J. Goodwin brought the Modified field down to the start of the 30 lap Modified feature. It was Kline that got the jump and raced out to the lead during the early stages of the main event. The first caution of the event flew on lap 4 and on that restart Kline continued to lead. Mike Colsten moved in to second place on lap 8 as he was using the far outside of the quarter mile oval during his advance. Meanwhile, Perrego was also using the outside to work his way forward from his fourteenth starting slot and Tyler Siri was moving up from his eighth starting spot.

On lap 12 the caution flew again. On the restart Colsten powered around the outside of Kline and immediately pulled away. Kline, Perrego and last weeks winner Nick Rochinski were now in a torrid battle for second place as Siri raced just outside of that battle. On the lap 12 restart Rusty Smith was in position 12 after starting sixteenth. On the restart he found a liking to the outside of the speedway as he quickly began to move toward the front.

Lap 17 would again see the pace slowed this time as a tangle occurred in turn four with Clay Butler, Matt Janiak and Brandon Walters. The three had strong drives prior to the jingle that ended the night for Janiak. Colsten again pulled to the outside of the speedway but now Perrego was in second place and the two began a great side by side battle. The yellow came out yet again on lap 21 as Siri, Kline and Rochinski dove three wide in to turn 1. Both Kline and Rochinski wound up spun as they got together. Siri was able to keep going. Colsten and Perrego restarted their great battle for the lead but on lap 24 Perrego dove from the inside and took the top line from Colsten.

Siri followed suit on lap 25 as he made his way to second place with Colsten left to contend with a charging Kevin Bates. As Bates battled with Colsten Rusty Smith joined the duo as he continued his march forward from sixteenth. Bates was able to sneak underneath Colsten on lap 28 to secure third place as Smith and Colsten battled to the finish. At the checkers Perrego held off Siri for the win. Siri secured his third runner-up finish of the season. Bates finished third with Colsten holding off Smith for fourth. Mike Butler, Brad Szulewski, Goodwin, Brian Malcolm and Brian Puckett rounded out the top ten.

Brad Cicio took the lead on lap 1 from Tom Hampton and never looked back as he led the balance of the 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event. Cicio, who tows to the speedway every Saturday from New Jersey became the fifth different winner in five races this season in the division. Multi-time IMCA Modified Track Champion Matt Cole charged from sixth place to capture second. Cole was able to catch Cicio over the final circuits but was unable to make a serious bid for the win. Tanner Harpell finished third over defending Track Champion Kyle Rohner who advanced from his twelfth starting spot. Hampton wound up fifth. The 20 lap feature went without a caution.

Doug Stack, Jr. was the early race leader in the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Shane Wolf, Jr. started sixth on the grid and took over the lead on lap 7. Wolf went on to become the first repeat winner of the season in the Street Stock division. Ray Lindquist had a strong run to come home in second place with Doug Polhamus, Matt Bowman and Dan Mazzarese completing the top five spots.

The Lightning Cat Expert victory went to Nick Kennedy. Kennedy took the lead on lap 12 from Jason Colwell Sr. Kennedy went on to lead the balance of the 15 lap feature for the victory. Colwell finished second with Dave Simms finishing third. Trevor Williams charged from the twelfth starting slot for third with Bob Kress racing from last to fifth at the finish.

Buck Mills, Jr. took the lead from Charlie Towner at the drop of the green in the 15 lap Factory Stock feature and never looked back. Mills held off many challenges from Towner throughout the feature for the win. Towner finished second followed by Levi Frank, Josh Towner and Jason Rinker.

Randy Lane took the lead from John Maynard on lap 5 to record his second Lightning Cat Novice feature win of the season. Dalton Maynard was the Slingshot feature winner.
