Airborne Park Speedway Postpones Season Opener
Story By: ROBBY KNOWLES / AIRBORNE PARK SPEEDWAY – PLATTSBURGH, NY – The 2017 Season Opener will have to wait one more week at Airborne Park Speedway.
Speedway Management made the decision late Monday evening to cancel the racing action for Saturday night. A practice will be in place of the scheduled race night on Saturday.
The weather forecast is looking positive for the weekend, however the next couple of days we are expecting rain. This weather would not allow us the proper amount of time to prepare the track for a mid-week practice and therefore we will be practicing on Saturday night rather than racing.
“It makes absolutely no sense to throw the asphalt drivers out there without out any practice,” Promoter John Walker said. “I’m not going to make their first time on the track count for points, it wouldn’t be the right thing to do.”
There is still a lot of work that Bruce Richards plans to do on the track. By the time the weather clears up and allows him to get on the track, it will be too short of time to produce a practice.
Opening Day is now scheduled for May 20 with a 7 p.m. post time. It will be Econo Lodge Autograph Night presented by A-Verdi Storage Containers.
Saturday’s practice time will be announced later this week. There is a possibility of a mid-week practice next week also.
“Please stick with us through this process,” Walker added. “We are very frustrated with the start of Spring, but we will soon be able to put it behind us.”
