Mother Nature Wins King Of Dirt Opener At Utica-Rome

Story By: ROB HAZER / KING OF DIRT – VERNON, NY – Mother Nature is the all-time wins leader in the world of dirt track racing. Today she claimed another victory, as King Of Dirt Racing opening round action at Utica Rome Speedway was forced to cancel and reschedule to June 18th.

With rain that fell all day Saturday in the Vernon, NY area and more showers on the radar Sunday around 3-4 PM combined with cold-damp conditions Bill and Kim Shea made the disappointing decision to cancel racing for the week that included the King Of Dirt Racing season openers for Sportsman and Pro Stocks.

“Bill and Kim made the right choice. We have folks coming from Vermont, Connecticut, Canada, Pennsylvania, and all over New York State. Their concern was having ideal racing conditions so their experience was positive and the fans had a great show to watch. It’s disappointing loosing out to the weather when you only have 20 or so weeks of racing during the summer months, but weather is the one variable in racing none of us can control,” said KOD Promoter Rob Hazer.

The disappointment of a rain out only lasts a short time however, as Utica Rome and King Of Dirt Racing worked out a rescheduled date of June 18th. Last year the same thing happened with an early rain out and return in June, which provided an action packed night of over 90 competitors between the two divisions (Sportsman and Pro Stock).

Focus now shifts to the KOD/DIRTcar East season opener on May 28th at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven, VT. Mike Bruno and company have been hard at work on the dirt surface in preparation for the Green Mountain State Clash.

The 1-800-GOT-JUNK King Of Dirt Racing DIRTcar East Sportsman will compete for $1,450 to win and $100 to start thanks to Andy’s Speed Shop and Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Dodson Construction and Dean’s Electrical Services present the KOD Sportsman Modified division, with a $20 entry fee for all drivers competing in Sportsman on Memorial Day weekend.

Admission prices for the evening are $15 for adults, $13 for senior, and $5 for teens. Pit admission is $30 with a license and $35 without. For more information visit www.devilsbowlspeedwayvt.com.

With the schedule now set and the rules up on the website, it’s only a matter of time before a very busy season of racing gets underway for King Of Dirt Racing.
