Track Surface Receives High Marks After Afton Practice
Story By: JR KENNERUP / AFTON MOTORSPORTS PARK – AFTON, NY – Going into the first official on track action at the Afton Motorsports Park last Friday night. Track co – promoters Ron Ford and Leon Andrus were very nervous on what the racing surface would be like. Especially since record snow fall one month ago led to portions of the first and second turn at the track being under water from the melting snow less than one week ago.
Nearly 50 racing machines in nine different divisions hot lapped on Friday night from six o’clock until nine o’clock. The racing surface along with the racing groove got wider and smoother the longer practice took place.
Ron Ford who will be handling track preparation this year had this to say after the three hour on track practice. ” I am very happy with how the racing surface turned out, especially since all of the water we had to pump off the racing surface. ”
The AMB Transponder System was hooked up and kept track of lap times for the cars on hand who had their transponders on. In the Sprint Cars who were on hand Dustin Purdy with his CRSA 305 Sprint set fast time honors for the entire night with a 13. 942 lap. In the Big / Small Block Modified division Alan Barker had quick time with a 14. 130 lap while in the Open Sportsman division Claude Hutchings, Jr. claimed quick time honors with a 15. 283 lap and in the Crate Sportsman division Cody Clark had a fast lap of 15. 374.
Track co – promoter Leon Andrus was equally excited after hot laps were completed. ” Everyone that I spoke to were very happy with the racing surface, we had a good turnout of fans tonight and we thank them for the food donation that will go to the local pantries. ”
This Friday night the Afton Motorsports Park will be in action for round two of their Test & Tune Sessions for any type of racing machine. Pit gates will open at 4 pm with hot laps starting at 6 pm sharp, pit admission will be $20 per person while grandstand admission will be free with a donation of a canned good that will go to the local food pantries.
All race teams who are participating this Friday night are asked to please have their transponders on for practice, so track officals can get their information into the AMB Transponder System before opening night, April 28th.
