Patriot Sprints To Help Merrittville Ring In 2017

Story By: JIM IRVINE / MERRITTVILLE SPEEDWAY – THOROLD, ONT – With a successful Test, Tune and Inspection Day in the books, Don Spiece’s first season as owner of Merrittville Speedway continues to build with Peters Excavating presenting the 2017 Spring Sizzler Saturday April 22nd.

Featured during the first Bobcat of Hamilton Weekly Racing Series Event are the Patriot Sprint Tour in addition to the Pinty’s 358 Modifieds, the S&W Service Centre Sportsman and the TUSA Canadian National Event for the Wood Motor Company Modified Lites rain delayed from last September.

“Peters Excavating has evolved into an industry leading multi-disciplined civil contractor reaching beyond the typical realms of construction,” reveals (Merrittville Speedway Owner) Don Spiece, “and for race fans … I’m excited to have Peters Excavating hosting our first night that goes beyond the typical realms of a race night.”

Going back to the 2016 Spring Sizzler … Jason Barney took home the Patriot Sprint Tour Opener with Mike Bowman and Brad Rouse also visiting Victory Lane in Pinty’s 358 Modified and S&W Service Centre Sportsman Events.

In previous Patriot Sprint Tour Events. Former winners include Bryan Howland, Scott Kreutter, Steve Poirier and Barney.

2016 Overall Champion Jared Zimbardi also took home his 3d career PST Canadian Title last season and expects to be challenged this season by a roster of drivers that includes Steve Glover, Mitch Brown, Pete Richardson, Kyle Drum, Darryl Ruggles, Paul Habek, Joe Trenca and Jordan Thomas.

Brown has already been on the Thorold track during April 15th’s Test and Tune as were Dylan Westbrook, Glenn Styres, Jimmy Huppenen and the Turners – Jamie, Ryan and Cory.

Like Klager, Westbrook was also a winner closing out the 2016 Season with a Sprint Car Win the first Friday in September.

Defending Mod Lite Spring Sizzler Winner Paul Klager has been waiting about 7 months to finish the TUSA Canadian National Weekend Opener from 2016. The Beamsville Driver took the Friday Night Opener before Saturday Night’s $1,200 to win finale was rained out.
