Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – BRIDGEPORT, NJ – A new record $10,000 championship is on the line for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP Velocita South Region in 2017.

Bridgeport Speedway is set to host the second round of the Velocita South Region on Sunday, April 23 with the third annual ‘South Jersey Shootout’ for STSS big-block/small-block Modifieds. The richest race of the spring at the five-eighths-mile oval offers a massive payout of $25,170 – $5,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400

On a cold March afternoon, veteran Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station, N.J., kicked off the STSS South season in Victory Lane at Delaware’s Georgetown Speedway, winning the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial. Horton put his Halmar International team into the early STSS South lead entering the familiar Bridgeport venue.

In two seasons of STSS South competition, there have been a pair of champions declared. A year ago, Stewart Friesen justified his long hauls south from Sprakers, N.Y., by clinching the championship. In 2015, Boyertown, Pa., driver Ryan Watt put his name at the top of the standings as the inaugural champion.

Both Friesen and Watt, along with a host of others, will be on hand to challenge for ‘South Jersey Shootout’ laurels.

The ‘South Jersey Shootout’ is set for its third April running at Bridgeport as a co-promotion involving speedway management and BD Motorsports Media LLC.

The inaugural event, in 2015, saw Rick Laubach of Hellertown, Pa., take the triumph over David Van Horn Jr., Craig Von Dohren, Watt and Jack Swain. A year ago, in April 2016, the ‘Flying Farmer’ Wade Hendrickson of Lawrenceville, N.J., bested Billy Pauch Sr., Friesen, David Hunt and Ryan Godown en route to the checkered.

An added bonus for drivers is the event’s status as an American Racer Cup Challenge event, offering bonus points toward the Cup’s Insinger Performance regional battle (South).

The ‘South Jersey Shootout’ is topped by a 40-lap STSS Modified main. Joining the series on the card are Sportsman (under Bridgeport weekly rules) and Outlaw Stocks.

Pit gates will open at 1 p.m. Grandstand gates unlock at 2 p.m. The drivers’ meeting takes place at 3:30 p.m., with 4 p.m. hot laps and 5 p.m. racing.

Adult grandstand admission is $25. Students (ages 10-15) pay $10 and Kids 9 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $35, with no license required.

In the event of rain, the program will be run April 30.
